What is Nutritional Optimization?
Similar to an athlete preparing for a marathon, nutritionally preparing your body for surgery can help support an optimal result. The body’s requirements for specific nutrients are increased when you undergo an event like surgery. When these requirements aren’t met, patients can experience challenges during the recovery process. Nutritional Optimization is an evidence-based technique that involves targeted nutritional supplementation to prepare the body to endure the stress of surgery, which can help reduce risk and accelerate recovery after surgery.

Understanding the Importance of Nutritional Optimization:
Optimizing patients’ bodies for surgery through nutrition is an effective and clinically proven method of improving patient outcomes and experience. Nutritional Optimization has been shown to reduce muscle atrophy1-4, reduce post-operative catabolism5,6, and accelerate wound healing7. Nutritional optimization is also recommended in many medical guidelines (ERAS® and Prehabilitation protocols) to help patients to maintain a better nutritional status around the time of surgery.

How to Participate in Nutritional Optimization:
Nutritional optimization can be easily integrated into practice through the use of the Ortho Nutrition Bundle. This program is offered to patients when booked for surgery and ships directly to their homes. It is an evidence-based solution that supports and empowers patients to proactively engage in their surgical care while addressing risk factors associated with surgery. The Ortho Nutrition Bundle is a 4-week program designed to reduce the physiological stress of surgery, maintain muscle mass, and improve both wound healing and patient-reported outcomes.
